Build a Mobile Video Rig with just 3 Accessories

Although I own a DSLR, I find myself using my phone frequently to take videos, photos, and to do live-streaming at events. Depending on the circumstance, I’m left holding my phone for 30 minutes or more sometimes. That had me look for another option in setting up a small, mobile video rig for my iPhone.

With these 3 accessories, a bendy tripod, phone mount, and small microphone, I’m able to improve the quality of my videos and photos.

Included in the kits is a RØDE VideoMic Me, a Ulanzi Phone Tripod Mount w/ Cold Shoe, and an iOgrapher Flexible Mini Tripod.

The shotgun style microphone is perfect for recording interviews and is truly plug-n-play, as it requires no batteries to operate. To connect it to my iPhone, I use a TRRS to Lightning adapter plug.

To attach the mic to the phone I use a Ulanzi phone mount, which is light weight aluminum and features a cold show mount on the top. Unlike other plastic designs, the aluminum version has a screw tab to secure to phone, so I know it wont pop out.

Last but not least, the flexible tripod allows me to have a solid grip on the phone and provides an easy way to clamp the whole thing to a railing or fence.

Using these three accessories together will definitely improve your video production quality, and with its inexpensive price tag it wont break the bank either. I’ve used this type of rig for several events, and even have it hanging on my backpack if I need it on the go.
