The Netgear Nighthawk M5 is a great mobile hotspot for a photojournalist like me who is always live-streaming or needs to upload large video files while on the go. So far I’ve owned it 5 months and it has worked as expected, with a few minor hiccups.
Although its not as responsive as an iPhone, the touch screen is a great addition to the hotspot as it allows me to change basically every setting from the device itself.
The hotspot comes with WiFI 6, a removable battery, USB C (which is data + charger), Ethernet port, and ports for an antenna. You can read more about the technical details here: netgear.com/home/mobile-wifi/hotspots/mr5200/
Overall, its a great little device. However, the downside is true 5G is not available in my area so I am stuck with 4G LTE. So, ill have to wait for technology to catch up. Also, it will randomly do firmware updates occasionally.
I have the hotspot on an AT&T Business Unlimited Elite plan so it does give me access to priority 4G LTE, so I’ve never had an issue with speed on the device, even with heavy use.
5 months later and its working great! If you’re in need of a dedicated mobile router I’d recommend it. Although, if you don’t live in a major city, you could probably just stick with the M1, Netgear’s previous mobile hotspot.
